Some lady just had eight friggin' babies

"The one on the end, she know it good."

I just don't get this. First of all, how the hell does this even happen? I'm no biologist or fertility doctor (well, that's not entirely true, zing!), but I can say with some degree of certainty that human beings aren't supposed to have litters.
A woman has given birth to octuplets at a Kaiser Permanente hospital in Bellflower, hospital officials confirmed today.
...“My eyes got to be the size of saucers,” Dr. Karen Maples said, when it became obvious there was an eighth child. “We just went on and delivered the babies.”
To give you an idea of how ridiculous this is:
Maples said 46 people were involved in the deliveries.
Forty-six people? For one woman? Better hope no one else happened to enter labor right then. That's gotta be like every doctor in the county, officially crossing the line from "Oh my, that poor mother!" to "What a selfish bitch." Seriously, lady, ever heard of the concept of other people?

How does someone provide for eight new kids? If you're not already rich, you must be royally fucked by something like this, right? Reminds me of that old nursery rhyme I just made up:
Two babies, fine, but three's a crowd
More than that is not allowed!

When something happens of this sort
Always remember to abort!

[repeat as necessary]

The Palin speech thingy and another, entirely separate topic only tangentially related

Settle down there, Scaredy McSkyisfalling.

Yes, Sarah Palin gave a decent speech and she is clearly comfortable with public speaking (she did go to sportscasting school, after all). And yes, I would still hit it.

But the thing is: As was made clear in this speech, she will only appeal to the hard cultural right. As people learn more about her, moderates and independents (i.e., the 6-8% of voters who're gonna decide the election) will be aghast at her views on creationism in schools (for it!), sex education (against it!), banning books (for it!), Jews (against them!), the bridge to nowhere (for it! against it!), animals (against them!), global warming (for it!) and on and on. Hers is not a resume built to appeal to swing voters.

The main thing I took away from last night’s culture-wars-igniting speech is that I really can’t see how she’s gonna persuade any undecided voters. Her best (and only) hope is to increase turnout among the religious right -- people who wouldn’t have voted for Obama anyway.

Those were some really nice images of the Palin family, though. I’ll give her that.

And speaking of her family (Ed. note: That segue was money. Watch how the rest of this post has little-to-nothing to do with what you just read!), there’s something I’ve been meaning to write about, but I wanted to hear her speech first.

In case you haven’t heard, Sarah Palin recently had a child, Trig. And surely if you heard about that, you heard that Trig has Down’s Syndrome. And surely if heard about that too, then you must also have heard about how the Palins knew about this condition, but decided to have the child anyway.

If the boldface didn’t give it away, it’s this last part I’d like to draw attention to. I know we’re not supposed to talk about candidates’ families blah blah blah, but I’ve been hearing about this Down’s baby all over the place. And Palin herself even made a point of bringing it up last night:
“And in April, my husband Todd and I welcomed our littlest one into the world, a perfectly beautiful baby boy named Trig. From the inside, no family ever seems typical. That's how it is with us. Our family has the same ups and downs as any other ... the same challenges and the same joys. Sometimes even the greatest joys bring challenge. And children with special needs inspire a special love. To the families of special-needs children all across this country, I have a message: For years, you sought to make America a more welcoming place for your sons and daughters. I pledge to you that if we are elected, you will have a friend and advocate in the White House.”
This is a woman so extremely pro-life that she opposes abortion even in cases of rape or incest. (She would allow it only if the mother was sure to die if the pregnancy continued. What a saint.)

That’s why all the praise being heaped onto Sarah Palin by groups on the right for having the “courage” to birth her child grates. This extra dose of adulation for a woman whose decision, in her eyes, came down to this:
Have the baby, or murder an innocent, helpless human being deserving of full human rights (IHHBDFHR).
Hmmm. If that’s how she viewed it, it sounds like a pretty fucking easy choice. Why should she get further credit because the baby had Down’s? She gets no such credit for not killing the other four. But because Trig was handicapped, are you telling me that might’ve made her more willing to slaughter her IHHBDFHR?

And shouldn’t it be the opposite, anyway? If someone decides to kill an IHHBDFHR directly because they found out it was handicapped, doesn’t that make that person even more morally culpable? What, your baby isn’t “normal,” so for that reason alone you decide to kill it?

Pro-lifers who “decide” to have their child even after finding out it has some disability do not deserve additional honor or glory. Rather, it seems to me, those pro-lifers who decide to end their pregnancy upon receiving this news should be set aside for particularly harsh scorn and shame. That’s some big-time, literally life-or-death hypocrisy.

If, as the the statistics say in the above links, 80% of unborn babies diagnosed with Down’s Syndrome are aborted, and America is way less than 80% pro-life, that means that a shitload of pro-lifers are snuffing their IHHBDFHRs. That, I would think, should be where people’s attention is focused. Why don’t we hear more about this on FOX News?

Sarah Palin is pro-life. That’s fine. She thinks life begins at conception. Okay. She thinks all abortions are innocent-baby executions. Ergo she does not deserve any extra-special credit for giving birth to disabled Trig, a.k.a. not killing her child.

(For the record, this isn’t aimed at Sarah Palin. I think it’s great that she brought Trig up and drew attention to special-needs children. It’s aimed at those on the right telling me how noble she is and using this as an example.)

The Culture of Life

"The partial-birth abortion ban, which an overwhelming bipartisan majority in Congress passed and I signed into law, represents a commitment to building a culture of life in America," - George "Dubya" Bush commenting on the the Supreme Court's ruling on "partial birth abortion".

"Because a society is measured by how it treats the weak and vulnerable, we must strive to build a culture of life. Medical research can help us reach that goal by developing treatments and cures that save lives and help people overcome disabilities." - GWB

"To build a culture of life, we must also ensure that scientific advances always serve human dignity, not take advantage of some lives for the benefit of others. We should all be able to agree on some clear standards. " - GWB

"It's important to promote a culture of life. A hospitable society is a society where every being counts and every person matters." - GWB

"I will lead our nation toward a culture that values life -- the life of the elderly and the sick, the life of the young, and the life of the unborn." - GWB

"I believe that life is valuable, even when it is unwanted, even when it is physically imperfect. I believe our society has a responsibility to defend the vulnerable and the weak." - GWB

How can you be pro-life and yet want to go to war as a first or second option and not your last?

How can you be pro-life and support torturing people?

How can you be pro-life and let let thousands of people be left stranded in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina?

How can you be pro-life and want to cut taxes to save rich people money and cut programs for the poor?

The Republican Party is a marriage of fiscal conservatives and Christians. How do they live under the same roof? If you're a hard-core Christian, wouldn't you be pretty close to socialist? Wouldn't you hate war?

I mean, GWB talks like believes life is sacred and yet he's made decisions that resulted in literally the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people. On top of that, he doesn't appear to show any remorse at all.

These people will go all out to ban abortion but it seems like the second you're born - you're on your own.

It's All About The Timing With Abortion

First of all, I was scrolling through the top stories sites on Yahoo! in order to find the article regarding the Supreme Court's decision to back the federal ban on partial birth abortion and I couldn't find it. I scrolled through stuff about the crazy dude who killed all the people, Alberto Gonzales testifying, A-Rod hitting a walk off HR (he's on fire, by the way), and what Sanjaya's plans are after American Idol, but the abortion story was not on the fron page. I had to search the news section in order to find the article. I thought that was pretty interesting.

Anyhow, I like the title of this post. It works on a lot of levels and that's pleasing. I guess my point, really, is that it's pretty interesting that this case came down so soon after Bush's repacking of the court (yes, I know it's not actually court packing, for those semantic sticklers). I wonder if there was an effort to hold it back in lower courts and what not in order for the new court to hear this case. I couldn't find the evidence, but apparently there was a very similar case regarding partial birth abortion when good old Sandra Day was on the court and her deciding vote made it 5-4 in favor of not restricting abortion rights. Now she's gone, and Alito is the new O'Connor, and all of a sudden the vote goes the other way.

I'm interested in the Supreme Court essentially hearing this case twice. I mean, if they heard a case about partial birth abortion in the past, isn't this established law? Constitutional experts? (That's you, Side Bar.) It seems like the Supreme Court doesn't have any rules. They can just do whatever the fuck they want. And when the other branches of government fuck up, they're the ones who preside over the hearings and what not. That's a pretty fucking good job. There's lot's of fucks in those last three sentences. Probably unnecessary. My point, though, is that why can they hear this case again? Or at least one that seems similar. They get to choose what cases they hear so obviously they could choose to throw this away saying that they had already ruled on that matter, but instead they chose to hear the case since it was more favorable for the conservative cause.

I am fascinated that this seems to be something people get really fired up about. I'm not sure why people want to go all out of their way the intrude on other people's lives. If you don't believe in abortion, then don't have abortions. And that's it. If someone decides to have an abortion, then, well, I guess it's irresponsible, but I guess you can justify it as just an extreme form of birth control. I'm not really a fan of abortion, but I'm also not presumptuous enough to name myself someone else's moral arbiter. If you want to think less of someone because they had an abortion, then I guess that's your right. But if you want to kill the doctor or firebomb the clinic, then you really just need to find something better to do with your time.

Also worth mentioning is that the people who are all fired up about being pro-life are the same people who complain about single mothers on welfare and kicking them off the dole. It's like, "hey fuck you...and did I mention fuck you?"

I'm rambling, I meant to talk more about the case. Isn't there a rule or something that specifies when they can and can't rehear cases?
