If You Were Gonna Have A Party...

My buddy, the Commodore, formerly known in blog parlance as Sushi Bar, recently asked me a question that I figured I'd open up to the forum. Incidentally, I changed his nickname because Sushi Bar was an exceedingly stupid nickname that I came up with and the Commodore is a good nickname, so there. Anyway, he's having a party (presumably in his new South American enclave) and wants to have an old school hip hop theme. Except he spent those formative years in Texas listening to the Judds or whoever, so he doesn't know anything about it. The question, then, is if you were to have an old school hip hop party, what would you include? For the sake of argument, let's say that old school is anything more than 10 years old.

The obvious ones:
"Scenario" - A Tribe Called Quest
"This or That" - Black Sheep
"OPP" - Naughty by Nature (You could substitute "Hip Hop Hooray" if necessary)
"Rapper's Delight" - Sugar Hill Gang
"Rock Box" - Run DMC (any song by Run DMC is acceptable. This is my favorite)
"They Want EFX" - Das EFX
"Momma Said Knock You Out" - LL Cool J
"Sometimes We Rhyme Slow" - Nice and Smooth
"Fugee La" - The Fugees
"The Humpty Dance" - Digital Underground

A couple of personal favorites:
"Parents Just Don't Understand" - DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince
"Basketball" - Curtis Blow
"Where I'm From" - Digable Planets
"93 'Til Infinity" - Souls of Mischief

What would you include? My list is far more old school than 10 years. I should have included some Jay Z and probably Eminem. I also left a few out intentionally, in order to elicit some comments. So comment, biotches.

"Method Man" (anything off 36 Chambers)
"Halftime", "It Ain't Hard to Tell" (anything from Illmatic)
"Bitties in the BK Lounge" (anything from De La Soul Is Dead, or 3 Feet High and Rising, for that matter)
"Flava in Ya Ear"
"Chief Rocka"
"Hip Hop Hooray"
"Time 4 Sum Aksion" (spelling rulz!)
"Bucktown" (by Smif-n-Wessun)
"Around the Way Girl"
"Nuthin but a G Thang"
"Gin and Juice"
"I Get Around" by 2Pac

I feel like I could go on forever, but that's a start.

Thanks for the list guys. Please add more as you think of them!

And no, my formative years weren't spent in Texas listening to the Judds. Garth Brooks, with a sprinkle of Gin Blossoms.

Both ChuckJerry and Open Bar's suggestions are extremely solid. "This or That" is actually "The Choice is Yours" (and I'm not being a dick, but if you're searching for it, the title is this and it's a good one.) A few more that occurred to me:

"Juicy" or "Big Poppa" by Notorious B.I.G.

"Tennessee" by Arrested Development

"Insane in the Membrane" by Cypress Hill

"It Takes Two" by Rob Base and DJ Easy Rock

"Summertime" (DJ Jazzy Jeff / Fresh Prince)

"Regulate" (Warren G.)

I'd throw a little Coolio in there. Gansta's Paradise and I Remember, maybe?

"It takes two" is a great one, Walt.

It's hard for me to pick a favorite Jay-Z song. You could go with something popular like "Big Pimpin" or "H to the Izzo", or super classic like "Brooklyn's Finest" (with Biggie Smalls). I personally love "Imaginary Player" and "Snoopy Track"

I think the best Eminem song is "Stan", but for a party you might go with "The Real Slim Shady" or some other such thing.
